Here’s the opening words from the Wikipedia page on activism: “Activism consists of efforts to promote, impede, or direct social, political, economic, or environmental change or stasis.”
Please edit this post to add your definitions (as you came to them in class last week) below:
Activism: Consists of efforts to promote, impede, or direct social, political, economic, or environmental change, or stasis, that is done by human citizens.
ReplyDeleteQuestioning the meaning of activism, I discovered Permanent Culture Now, a website that cultivates an environment for critical thinking and promoting societal change.
ReplyDeletePermanent Culture now defines activism as “quite simply taking action to effect social change; this can occur in a myriad of ways and in a variety of forms… This can be led by individuals but is often done collectively through social movements.”
activism:
ReplyDeletea motivation beginning within an individual that effects affects on their environment in a way that alters the environment.
sorry, should read: "in a way that alters the functions of the environment."
DeleteUnfortunately, I wasn't in class last week -- but if I'm to provide MY definition of activism, I guess I'd have to go with:
ReplyDelete"Actions borne out of conviction, concern and a willful disregard for personal well-being."
Specifically as in http://wiwriterguy.blogspot.com/2014/09/forward-into-past.html
DeleteActivism: efforts, whether individual or collective, to drive, maintain, or impede change--of any sort.
ReplyDeleteActivism: thoughtful effort designed to create or impede change, or maintain the status quo.
